Scuba Diving in Maarehaa Kandu

Location: South East of Hadahaa

This is the channel between the islands of Maarehaa and Gemanafushi, situated on the outer edge of the atoll. Strong currentS up to 5 – 6 knots is usually present.

Coral life: Strong and healthy

Marine life: There is often the possibility to see up to 200 grey reef sharks as well as large schools of fish, hawksbill and green turtles, Napoleon wrasse, white tip and black tip reef sharks, dog-tooth tuna, eagle rays, moray eels, and occasionally sailfish.

Dive technique: Depending on the current, there are various methods of diving here. When the current is incoming, descend in the blue, staying stationery at the channel edge and slowly drift inside the channel, or descend just outside the reef and drift into channel. When current is outgoing, the best method is to jump inside the channel and drift to the outer edge continuing along the reef outside the atoll. Highly experienced divers may choose to cross the channel during light or medium incoming current.
